Dear Families,
Monday is individual student PICTURE DAY!
It was another wonderful week in room 204. We are working on so many exciting projects!
Math- we have been practicing place value, multi-digit addition and subtraction. A fun way to practice these skills are with games such as "Changing Places", "Close to 1,000", "Close to 0", and "PIG". Ask your kiddo to play at home with you.
Enrichment- Novel Study: Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. We are discovering new vocabulary, gaining an understanding of home, belonging, segregation and friendship. Ask your child to share their summary of what has happened so far.
Unit of Inquiry (Social Studies)
Immigration Unit -Please look for Family History Project Expectations to be coming home in Green Home folders next week. We have set the date for our end of unit activity, Ellis Island Simulation- October 9!
More information will be coming home soon. We have been reading a great deal about various immigration stories and will even be writing poetry.
Reading/Writing
Students have received their AR Goals and book level zones. This gives them some guidelines on the best books to be reading for their levels. We have been reading and writing poetry for several days. The beauty pouring out on the students’ pages is remarkable. I’ll post some soon. Students will be writing poetry about immigration and biographies of poets that have inspired them. Many have chosen favorites like Shel Silverstein, Jack Prelutsky, and Dr. Seuss. Others have decided to research and write about poets like Maya Angelou, Robert Frost and Langston Hughes.
Reading at home at least 100 minutes a week is a great way to establish life-long reading skills.
Please don’t forget to send a snack with your child.
Thank you,
Diane Santorico
