Dear Families, On behalf of all of us in room 204, we hope this finds you well. Here is a look into what we have been up to and where we’re headed! Reading - We have just finished Love That Dog by Sharon Creech and I was so impressed with the students’ summaries of the book. We are also practicing our comprehension strategies such as: Questioning, Determining Importance, Creating Mental Models and more! Enrichment - Novel Study- Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. Through this novel we are analyzing characters and author’s style. We love his metaphors! IB- Unit of Inquiry We are will on our way to Ellis Island! Don’t forget it is Oct. 9th! See the flyer in your child’s Home Folder today. We are focusing on the Key Concepts of Causation, Change and Perspective. Students are really gaining an understanding of why people migrate and how that may impact their lives. Writing - As we are finishing up our first unit on poetry, students will be writing a biography of a poet that has inspired them. The finished writing piece will be a 3 paragraph essay. We are going through each of the writing steps together. Math - Place value, addition and subtraction. As I have told the students many times, one thing they will really focus on this year in math is their ability to explain their thinking in clear and concise ways in writing and speaking. The ability to use several different strategies also helps students understand the mathematical concepts more deeply. Book Orders -Book orders arrived! If you ordered books, they are coming home today! Monday is Peace Day. Students should wear a White T-Shirt if possible. Snack and water bottles Please remember to include a snack and water bottle with your child each day. We have snack at 10:15 each morning. Library Check out is this coming Thursday and will be every other Thursday. Please send books back. Ellis Island is Oct. 9th and our Family History Projects are due on Oct. 2nd!
